Mainstream value tier (best for most homes)
These are the Bloomberg NEF Tier 1 Chinese manufacturers — JA Solar, LONGi, Trina and Jinko — and they account for roughly 75% of UK residential installs in 2026. Panels are 430–465W, 21–22% efficiency, with a 25-year product warranty and 30-year performance warranty guaranteeing ≥87.4% of nameplate output.
- JA Solar DeepBlue 4.0 — the standout value pick, and the exclusive panel used by Octopus Energy Solar across England and Wales. If a major supplier bets its whole install base on it, that's a strong reliability signal.
- LONGi Hi-MO S10 — the efficiency leader among mainstream brands at 25%, with strong low-light performance that suits the UK's overcast days.
- Jinko Tiger Neo 3.0 — 24.8% efficiency, ideal for larger households with high energy needs.
- Trina Vertex S+ — great cost-per-kWh for large roofs.
You get ~95% of the output of a premium panel at ~60% of the cost. The marginal gain from a premium panel rarely covers its price premium on a standard roof. If budget or straightforward value is your priority, this tier is the answer.
Premium tier (REC, Panasonic, Qcells)
These European and Japanese brands cost 20–40% more than mainstream, but earn it with better low-light performance, tighter build tolerances and longer warranties.

Ultra-premium: SunPower Maxeon
SunPower Maxeon is effectively alone at the top tier in 2026. Its IBC (interdigitated back-contact) cells deliver 22.8–24% efficiency, the industry's lowest degradation rate (0.25% first year), and a 40-year product and performance warranty — nearly double the standard.
The catch: it costs 40–60% more than a mainstream panel — roughly £1,800–£3,500 extra on a typical array. That's justified only when:
- Your roof space is genuinely constrained and every watt matters, or
- You plan to own the property for 30+ years and care about lifecycle cost, or
- You need the low-profile all-black look for a listed building.
On most UK roofs, the payback maths doesn't justify Maxeon's premium. A 40-year warranty is only valuable if you'll still own the house in 40 years. For a typical 10–15 year payback analysis, a mainstream Tier 1 panel wins.
PERC vs TOPCon vs HJT vs IBC
These are cell technologies, and they explain most of the efficiency differences:

For UK conditions, the HJT advantage shows most in July and August, when a south-facing roof can hit 50–60°C. At that temperature a TOPCon panel loses ~7.5% output while a Panasonic HJT loses ~4%. Compounded over 25 summers, that's real extra kWh.
The 5 specs that actually matter
Don't get lost in marketing. When comparing quotes, focus on these five:
- 1. Efficiency — how much sunlight becomes electricity (19–25%). Matters most when roof space is tight.
- 2. Wattage — the panel's peak output (400–500W). Higher wattage = fewer panels for the same total.
- 3. Product warranty — covers defects. Look for 25 years minimum (Maxeon: 40).
- 4. Performance warranty — guarantees minimum output over time (typically 87–88% at year 30).
- 5. Temperature coefficient — how much output drops in heat. Lower is better (-0.24% is excellent, -0.35% is average).
