For most UK homeowners in 2026, yes — solar panels are worth it. A typical 4 kW system costs £6,000–£8,000 installed (with 0% VAT), saves around £550–£600 per year on electricity bills, and pays for itself in 11–13 years. Over a 25-year lifespan, that's roughly £5,000–£8,000 of net profit after the system has paid for itself.

Add a battery, and the maths improves significantly: annual savings rise to £800–£1,000, self-consumption jumps from ~45% to ~75%, and payback shortens to 8–10 years. After payback, you're looking at 15+ years of effectively free electricity.

The UK saw a record 244,000 solar installations in 2025 — more than any previous year. In the first half of 2026 alone, a further 142,536 systems were installed (the highest six-month total since 2011), and July 2026 saw solar provide 14.4% of Britain's electricity — a new all-time record. Does it matter where you live?

Yes — but less than you'd think. The south of England gets more sun, but installation costs are also higher there. The north gets less sun but installation is cheaper. Payback nets out broadly similar nationwide.

Do you need a battery?

Strictly speaking, no — solar works without one. But the maths is dramatically better with storage, and here's why:

Without a battery, you self-consume about 45% of what your panels generate. The other 55% gets exported to the grid at SEG rates of 3–15p/kWh. Meanwhile, the electricity you buy back in the evening costs 26p/kWh. You're selling cheap and buying expensive.

A battery flips this. By storing surplus daytime generation, you raise self-consumption to 75% or higher. Instead of exporting at 5p and buying at 26p, you use your own stored power for free. On Octopus Agile, you can even charge the battery overnight at 10p/kWh and use it during the evening peak — a practice called arbitrage that adds £300–£800/year of value.

0% VAT — what it actually saves you

Since April 2022, the UK government has applied 0% VAT to the supply and installation of solar panels, battery storage and other energy-saving materials for residential properties. This relief runs until 31 March 2027 in Great Britain.

On a typical £7,000 installation, 0% VAT saves roughly £1,000–£1,400 compared to the previous 5% reduced rate, and £1,400–£2,000 compared to the standard 20% rate. The saving is applied automatically by your installer — you don't claim it back.

To qualify:

The relief covers panels, inverters, batteries (since February 2024) and labour — but not standalone battery purchases by DIY installers (those revert to 20% VAT).

Do I need a battery with solar panels?

Not strictly, but a battery roughly doubles your self-consumption from ~45% to ~75%, meaning you use far more of your own free solar electricity instead of exporting it at low SEG rates. For most homes with evening usage, a battery shortens payback and increases 25-year profit.

What is the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG)?

The SEG is a government-backed scheme requiring large electricity suppliers to pay you for surplus solar electricity exported to the grid. Rates range from 3p to 15p per kWh depending on supplier and tariff. Octopus Agile Export offers variable rates up to 15p/kWh at peak times.

Is 0% VAT still available in 2026?

Yes. 0% VAT on residential solar PV and battery installations in Great Britain runs until 31 March 2027. Northern Ireland also qualifies under the Windsor Framework from 1 May 2023. Your installer applies the zero rate at point of sale.

Does solar work on north-facing roofs?

North-facing roofs generate roughly 30–40% less than south-facing ones. They can still be viable, but payback extends to 14–18 years. East-west facing roofs are a strong alternative, producing more evenly across the day.
