How this calculator works

This calculator estimates how much of your EV's annual electricity need can be covered by your solar panels, and the resulting savings compared to charging from the grid or running a petrol car.

The maths

EV annual need = annual mileage × EV consumption (kWh/mile)

Solar surplus for EV = system size (kW) × sun hours × solar-to-EV share

Solar coverage = min(solar surplus, EV need) ÷ EV need × 100%

Why solar + EV is the strongest combination

An EV roughly doubles your home electricity usage — a typical 3-bed home goes from 3,400 kWh to 6,400 kWh when you add 10,000 miles of EV driving. This is actually good news for solar economics, because:

For most UK homeowners with an EV, a 5–6 kW solar system (with battery) covers 70–90% of combined home + EV electricity needs during April–September, and 30–50% during winter. Over a full year, solar typically covers 50–70% of EV charging.

Frequently asked questions

Can I charge my EV with solar panels?

Yes. If you have solar panels and a home EV charger, you can charge your electric car directly from solar generation during daylight hours. A typical 4 kW solar system in southern England can cover 40-60% of an average EV's annual charging needs (April-September). Adding a battery extends solar charging into the evening.

How many solar panels do I need to charge an EV?

A typical EV doing 10,000 miles a year uses about 3,000 kWh (10,000 miles × 0.30 kWh per mile). Covering that from solar alone takes roughly 8 panels — about 3.2 kW of dedicated capacity — on our London sun-hours assumption. The rule of thumb is about 406 kWh of generation per 400W panel a year (0.4 kW × 1,015 sun hours); divide your EV's annual kWh by that.
